What is Interstitial Cystitis?

Interstitial cystitis is a chronic medical condition affecting the bladder. People living with this condition typically experience sensations of pain and pressure in their bladder as well as lower urinary tract symptoms without any infection or other clear causes.

Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Bladder pain that gets worse as the bladder fills
  • Pain in other areas in addition to the bladder, such as the urethra, lower abdomen, lower back, and/or pelvic area
  • Pain in the perineal area
    • For women, pain behind the vagina
    • For men, pain behind the scrotum
  • Pain with sexual intercourse
  • Urinary urgency
  • Urinary frequency (having to urinate often)

Because of these symptoms, it’s very common for patients with this condition to be diagnosed incorrectly with a urinary tract infection (UTI); however, a urine culture will return as negative.

How might physiotherapy help patients with this condition?

There is no single treatment for Interstitial Cystitis; however, pelvic health physiotherapy offers a variety of pain management options. Our experienced physiotherapists can provide you with many different corrective pelvic exercises that can be performed to strengthen the muscles in and around the bladder.

At your first appointment, your physiotherapist will ask you a number of questions about your medical history and conduct a thorough assessment to decide what types of treatment you may benefit from. Your treatment plan may include mobility exercises, pelvic floor muscle training, hands-on manual therapy, and a therapeutic home program.
